700 WINDOW OF 3 LIGHTS AND 6 TRACERY LIGHTS Phs SANCTUARY, E wall
1 Stonework: Reticulated tracery beneath a two-centred arch. Conforming rere arch with deeply spayed reveals.
Tracery lights (1-6) & 6 eyelets
(1) Quatrefoil with slightly extended lower lobe. In the centre a yellow shield bearing entwined Alpha and Omega, set against a pale background with green leaves and vine tendrils, all within a black and white border.
(2&3) Stylised daggers with a narrow yellow and black border in parts, a white background with green vine leaves and a coiled stem reaching up to a bunch of purple grapes. In (2) Mary, with a white nimbus, attired in a white robe beneath a blue cloak, looking to her left. (3) St John the Baptist with yellow nimbus and wearing an animal skin. He holds a palm cross in his left hand and the Lamb of God, below him the River Jordan.
(4-6) Long-lobed trefoils, upper edges with a narrow black and white border, partly checked. Part of a rainbow appears in all three lights.
(4 and 6) Each light depicts a kneeling, censing angel in white with red and yellow wings, holding a yellow chain and censer. (5) Shows an angel in white with red and yellow wings holding a shield with ihc in l/c gothic letters, 6 trapezium-shaped eyelets in blue glass.
Main Lights (7-9) The Tree of Life
Trefoil-headed lights with clear narrow borders. The bottom third of all three lights were originally clear quarries covered by a high reredos, removed in the late 1970s, and, since 2011, contain opaque quarries with a dedication centre bottom. See description at (9). A large cross takes up the central light with its arms extending into lights 7 and 9. Scrolls are in modified gothic caps and l/c.
(7) In the left-hand lancet, five figures are depicted, set against a background of vines. At the top, St Peter in red with golden nimbus, holding a pair of keys, one yellow, one white, and a scroll with a quotation taken from Peter 2:24 / Who bare our sins in His / own body on the tree / (sic). Below on the right, on the left arm of the cross, a bunch of grapes and three stalks of wheat. Beneath is Isaiah with golden hexagonal nimbus, brown hat, and brown, blue and purple cloak, bearing a scroll with a quotation from Isaiah 53:4 / Surely he hath borne our / griefs and carried our sorrows /. Below, again, is Isaac with golden hexagonal nimbus, bearing a wooden cross and a scroll with a quotation from Genesis 22:8 / God will / provide himself / a lamb for a / burnt offering /. Beneath Isaac is Noah, with golden hexagonal nimbus, dressed in blue with a beard and conical hat, holding an ark with a red roof, on which is a white dove carrying an olive branch. Scroll next to him with quotation from Lesson 6 / Noah prepared an ark / for the saving of his house /.
The bottom figure, with golden hexagonal nimbus, is Adam in brown holding a spade with blue blade, and an apple set in a surround of leaves. The scroll behind him from Corinthians 15:22 / For as in Adam all die / even so / in Christ shall all be / made alive / (sic).
(8) The central light has the cross from top to bottom as the background, intertwined with vines on white, surrounded by a narrow yellow border. At the top is a bunch of purple grapes and three stalks of wheat, and a scroll with quotation from John 1:29 / Behold the LAMB / of GOD which / taketh away the sins / of the world /. Where the cross bar meets the vertical is the Agnus Dei, and the Banner of Victory. Further down, on either side of the cross, two more bunches of grapes with three stalks of wheat between. Below is the large, bare-footed figure of St Michael, with red wings and golden nimbus, wearing a red and blue cloak with a flaming sword tucked into a belt on his right side, and bearing aloft the scroll carrying the quotation from Revelation 22:2 / The leaves / of the TREE / were for the / healing / of the nations /. Below his feet is the ground in green and blue.
Beneath, is the Beresford coat of arms set against green quarries with the motto on a white scroll hatched reverse.

the motto / NIL SINE / CRUCE / TANDEM FIT / CIRCULUS ARBOR / in roman caps with the date / 1914 / underneath in black on a white background. The motto translates as: ‘Nothing without the cross – a shoot at length becomes a tree’. See (ref a) and 7 below.
In the upper left hand quarry is the Beresford family crest of a dragon’s head pierced through the neck with a broken spear and with part of same in the mouth. In upper right hand quarry a black bear salient, muzzled and chained in gold. Bottom left hand has the Beresford initials EAB and the bottom right hand quarry AMB (see 8 below).
(9) The right hand light, again, has five figures, set against a white background with vine leaves, grapes and wheat on the right end of the cross. At the top is St Paul with a golden nimbus, bald with a long beard, dressed in blue, holding a rod. A scroll below and to his right with quotation from Corinthians 1:23 / We / preach CHRIST crucified /.
Below is King David, with golden hexagonal nimbus, dressed in purple with conical hat and playing a psaltery. Scroll to his right from Psalm 111:9 / He sent redemption / unto his people /.
Beneath is Moses, with golden hexagonal nimbus, in blue, holding a long thin cross. To his left a scroll from John 3:14 / As Moses lifted up the serpent so / shall the Son of man be lifted up / (sic).
Below Moses is King Melchisedek with golden crown and central white domed cap and hexagonal nimbus, wearing red, and in his left hand carrying a goblet and bread. In his right hand he holds a scroll with inscription from Hebrews 5:6 / Christ the Lord a priest for ever [-] the / order of Melchisedek offer’d bread and wine / (sic).
At the bottom, with golden hexagonal nimbus, is Abel, in red, holding a lamb. Scroll to his right bearing the words from Hebrews 12:24 / The blood of sprinkling, better / than that of Abel / (sic). At the base of the window is a panel of beige glass with the names of two church wardens and a date, painted in brown MAUREEN COLEMAN/ VICTOR ALLSOP / CHURCH WARDENS / 2011. These were church wardens at the time of installation.

1 Stonework: Y-tracery beneath a two-centred arch, conforming rere arch, shallow splayed reveals and flat sill.
Tracery lights (1-3) trapezoid-shaped lights. (1)The letters ihc in l/c gothic letters in black on a white background with brown and green oak leaves and a narrow border in green and white. (2&3) Each has a central roundel, in (2) with EAB and in (3) HAB (see 9) in idiosyncratic letters on a white background. Behind each roundel is an oak branch in green and brown on a white background, in irregular shapes and surrounded by a green and white narrow border.
Main lights (4-6)
Window of 3 lancet lights. At the base of (4&6) is a hopper opening. The central lancet (5) contains an oak tree with branches spreading into (4 & 6).
(4)On a white and green background the left hand oak tree branch reaches to a small golden patonce cross at the apex. High up in the head of the light, 2 pigeons nestle amongst the leaves, whilst on a lower branch there is a starling sitting on the buckle of the strap supporting a shield bearing the Arms of Beresford Blazon: Argent a bear rampant Sable armed Gules muzzled and chained Or [Beresford] (ref a)
Below, on a background of white and green quarries, stands a bare-headed knight in silver-coloured armour, one spur showing, his gauntleted right arm resting on the blade of his pole-axe, his bare left hand held out. The ground beneath his feet is covered with leaves and there are clusters of pale flowers.
In the base of the light, in black painted idiosyncratic lettering, caps and l/c, on a green and pale background, is the Beresford memorial for all descendants of, or married to descendants of Revd Gilbert & Anne Beresford (see (i) 9). Some leading repairs block some of the text.
(5)The central lancet shows an oak tree reaching up to a larger golden patonce cross in the apex. Below the cross is a group of three figures in a pale colour outlined in brown. The central figure is the nimbed Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child who has a cruciform nimbus. To her right is the nimbed St Anthony Abbot, kneeling, with a large T on his cloak, holding a Tau cross and with a pig at his feet. To her left is the nimbed and crowned figure of St Catherine of Alexandria with long unbound hair, holding a martyr’s palm in her right hand and with her left hand resting on a spiked wheel. By her feet is a bound book.
Below is the central figure of a priest (possibly Gilbert Beresford) dressed in Eucharistic vestments, comprising a red cope with blue lining, the orphrey decorated with the images of saints. He wears an apparel of the amice and carries a drawing of an altar inside a church. By his right shoulder is a shield bearing the Beresford Arms (see (4) above) but this time with a crescent for difference. By his left shoulder the Arms of the See of Lichfield although the colours have been reversed from the normal way namely:

Below his feet is a shield bearing the Royal Arms of France (ancient) quartering England adopted by Edward III. On each side of the tree birds fly against a pale sky, and at the foot of the tree, nestling in woodland, is a depiction of Fenny Bentley church, near Ashbourne, Derbys, where the Revd Gilbert Beresford became Rector in 1838 and where there is a similar memorial window.
In the base of the light is a dedication in painted black idiosyncratic lettering JAMES, SON OF THOMAS BERESFORD / canon of Lichfield, Founded Scholarships in / S. John’s Coll: Cambridge, & a chantry at Fenny Bentley /
Below is an Achievement of Arms of the Beresford family. Set on a green and white leaded background with narrow border.

Just above the shield there are two crests facing each other. On the dexter side a dragon’s head Azure pierced through the neck with a broken spear Or, in the mouth the remaining part of the spear the point upwards Or [BERESFORD] and on the sinister side the bear rampant as in the Arms
(6)Against a background of clear quarries, an oak branch reaches up to a gold- coloured patonce cross in the apex. A thrush sits on a higher branch with 2 red squirrels below. In the centre of the lancet, against a background of clear quarries, is the figure of a lady with white head dress, full sleeves and under garment covered with a purple over dress. Part of the oak tree is visible on the left and there are green leaves beneath her feet and clusters of white flowers.
The base contains a dedication followed by Latin text in idiosyncratic lettering (See 9 (ii)) A metal stanchion with fleur-de-lys finial is attached to the saddle bars on the outside of each light.

Tracery light (1)
Quatrefoil with pointed lower lobe shows a figure in blue bearing a green banner inscribed /BLESSED / MERCIFUL /. Green and clear quarries and narrow fillet border against the stonework.
Main lights (2&3)
Trefoil-headed lights. At the top of (2) a city with red walls and a central dome. At the top of (3) in a roundel the Lamb of God with a turreted city behind and the words / Urbs celestis Hierusalem, translated as ‘celestial city of Jerusalem’, / in caps and l/c below.
Each light has a narrow black and white check border with an occasional red flower and each contains three roundels with the same border, all on a background of blue grass with green leaves.
The 1st roundel in (2) shows Adam and Eve being driven from the Garden of Eden by an angel in white, inscription from Romans 5:12 / By one man sin entered into / the world and Death by sin /. In (3) is shown the crucifixion (3 crosses set at an angle to each other), with the Virgin Mary and a second figure (possibly St John the Evangelist) at the base of the cross, the whole scene in pale yellow and brown. Inscription from St Peter 2:24 / Who in our own self bare our sins / in His own body on the tree that we / being dead unto sins might live unto right / eousness by whose stripes we are healed /.
The 2nd roundel in (2) shows a bearded Good Samaritan kneeling on the right to tend the seated injured traveller who is leaning against the trunk of a large tree. Another group of people under the tree is shown top left, lower right the Priest and the Levite passing by, and a city in the background top right. Inscription (above left) from Luke 10:30 / A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jerico & fell among / thieves which stripped him / of his raiment & wounded him / and departed leaving him half dead / (sic). And (below right) from Luke 10:33 / But a certain Samaritan as he jour / neyed came where he was & when / he saw him he had compassion on him / and went to him & bound up his / wounds, pouring in oil and wine /. In (3), the Good Samaritan stands to the left of the traveller, mounted on a donkey with the innkeeper to the right. Behind the group is a large tree and a building with Romanesque arches and, higher on the hill, a city. Inscription upper right from Luke 10:34 / and set him on / his own beast and / brought him to an inn / and took care of him / (and lower left) / and on the morrow when he / departed he took out two pence / and gave them to the host and / said unto him take care of him / and whatsoever thou spendest more / when I come again I will repay thee /.
The 3rd roundel in (2) depicts Baptism. A preacher in the pulpit holding a baby, a pillar behind, with 3 adults and 2 children standing on the left, and another adult to the right with a flagon placed on the black and white chequered floor beside her. A window and a cupboard in the background. Inscription lower left from Colossians 2:12 / Buried with Him / in Baptism wherein / also ye are risen / with Him / (sic). Beneath this roundel is a white house with a red roof.
In (3) is depicted the giving of the Sacrament. The priest gives bread to a group of three kneeling before the altar, whilst a fourth, a boy, kneels to the left of the aisle. Inscription lower right, from John 6:54 / Whoso eateth My / Flesh and drinketh My / Blood hath eternal life / and I will Raise him / up at the last day /. Beneath this roundel a sheaf of wheat.
