604   BIBLES AND PRAYER BOOKS PRE-1851

King James Version with Apocrypha     VESTRY

The Bible is covered in adhesive thin red leatherette. The cover is damp and dirty with some worm holes. Beneath small tears it is possible to see that the original cover is brown leather on board. No external lettering is visible. Beneath the leatherette one can discern that there are seven raised bands on the spine. The pastedowns are of marbled blue paper. The Bible has a general air of neglect. It is very dirty, damp and foxed with red stains from the leatherette. It is not paginated. Date is on title page.

i) Full bound in black leather on board. The spine has five raised bands with HOLY BIBLE in tooled gilt and roman lettering between bands one and two. There is a tooled design on the front and rear covers and between each band. The cover itself is very worn and the spine is breaking away. The bible has pale brown pastedowns. The front fly is missing. All the pages are gilt edged. The date appears on the title page. The New Testament is not dated.

1 Fully bound in black leather on board. There are five bands on the spine with HOLY BIBLE in tooled gilt and roman lettering between bands one and two. There are tooled designs on the front and rear covers as well as on the spine. The bible is very worn and the front and rear covers are beginning to break away from the spine. The pastedowns are off white. On the front fly, hand written in ink is: Thomas & Elizabeth Simpson / Hoby / Leicestershire 1855. This is repeated on the inside rear pastedown. The date appears on the title page

B   Revised Standard version  Phs SANCTUARY, High Altar

i)

1 In excellent condition. Full bound in black leather with a design stamped on the front and rear covers. There are four bands on the spine with. HOLY / BIBLE in tooled gilt and roman lettering between bands one and two. There are black pastedowns at the front and rear with a tooled gilt design round the edge. All the pages are gilt-edged. There are two red ribbon page markers. The inscription on the white fly is hand written in black gothic script with all capital letters in red and embellished with decorative flourishes. This reads: Given to All Saints’ Church, / Hoby, / by the Cowman Family; / in loving memory of / Thomas Leslie Cowman, /

October 12th 1910-May 16th 1981. / The rear white fly contains a Register of Ministers who served from 1220-2011, hand written in black gothic script with all capital letters in red. Also recorded is the parish reorganisation in 1993 when the parish was renamed The Parish of Upper Wreake and taken into The Framland Deanery. A note recorded on a piece of spare paper notes that the parish was reorganised again in 2016.There is no date on the title page. The back of the title page notes that the Old Testament copyright is 1952 and the New Testament, second edition is 1971

E  Brown’s Self Interpreting Bible  Ph VESTRY

  1. Full bound brown leather on board. The front and rear covers have a stamped design with tooled gilt decoration. The front and rear covers are edged in stamped gilded tin. There are two matching gilded tin clasps which are no longer able to close the book. The outer part of the bible is in extremely poor condition and demonstrates general neglect. It is covered in white mildew so that the stamped design is hard to discern. The leather binding on the spine has totally broken away. On this binding are five raised bands with HOLY BIBLE/ in tooled gilt between bands one and two. There is a tooled gilt design between each band. The gilt edges of the pages are now extremely worn. Coloured plates are interleaved throughout the 1122 pages. The title page reads as follows: BROWN’S / SELF INTERPRETING Family BIBLE / CONTAINING THE / OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS; / TO WHICH ARE ANNEXED / MARGINAL REFERENCES. The bible is not dated. The publisher is named at the foot of the page. A family registry is printed between the Old and the New Testaments. The Family Portrait Gallery has space for photos. These pages are left blank. There follows the Family Register of four pages. The first of these is headed Parent’s (sic) Names. 1 Full bound in black speckled leather on board. There are five bands on the spine with THE/ HOLY / COMMUNION / in tooled gilt and roman lettering between bands one and two. OXFORD is in tooled gilt above the tail. The binding is identical to the binding of the Book of Common Prayer (606 A ii). The front cover has fillet surrounds. In the centre are the words ALL SAINTS CHURCH / HOBY 1960 / in tooled gilt and Roman lettering. There are black pastedowns. Hand written in ink on the white fly: PRESENTED BY / MR & MRS T. L. COWMAN / WHIT-SUNDAY 1960. / The book which contains two black ribbon page markers is in good condition. The prayers for the royal family acknowledge Queen Elizabeth, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen Mother and Prince Charles.

1 Full bound in brown leather on board. There are five bands on the spine with COMMUNION / AND / OTHER / SERVICES / in tooled gilt between bands one and two. Roman lettering. There are tooled gilt fillets between all the bands, also around the front and rear covers. The words ALL SAINTS / HOBY / with a Latin cross inserted between are in tooled gilt in the centre of the front cover. There are marbled pastedowns. A brown leather label is pasted onto the inside front cover with the following in tooled gilt: PRESENTED / BY / EDWARD ADEN BERESFORD, / (RECTOR) / EDWARD BREWER BROOKS, / EDWARD BRETT BAILEY, / CHURCHWARDENS / 1902. / All the pages are gilt-edged. There are two red ribbon page markers. The book is in poor condition. The front cover is breaking away from the spine. Some pages have been repaired with what is now brittle sellotape. Other pages have been taped together. Prayers for the royal family acknowledge King Edward, Queen Alexandra, George Prince of Wales and the Princess of Wales.

1 Full bound in plain black fabric on board. All pages are of plain white paper. The title page, hand written in gothic and italic script is inscribed as follows: All Saints’ Hoby Memorial Book/ 2006/ This Memorial Book is dedicated to/ the memory of/ Dora Kathleen Beatrice Tarrant/ The Garden of Remembrance in the Churchyard/ Extension for the burial of ashes was dedicated/ in her memory in 1981 by Revd. Richard H. Chatham,/ Rector./ The Memorial Book and Bookcase are the/ gift of Sheila Warner and Lisa Wright and/ are given in memory of Andrew Warner and/ Patricia Blackwell./ Maureen Coleman & Victor Allsop – church wardens./ Recorded deaths are from 2006 to date. The names of the deceased and their dates of death are recorded verso and recto are tributes of no more than twenty words. The book is displayed in a wooden case with a glazed viewing panel. Beneath the book are forms where details of the deceased can be recorded prior to entry in the book. The whole is displayed in an oak box standing on square legs with chamfered edges.

611 WORLD WAR 1 REMEMBERED   Phs N AISLE

i) An exhibition by the Hoby District Local History Society which honours the lives and war records of the twelve men whose names are recorded on the War Memorial in the churchyard. Twelve laminated pages include photographs, war service and memorabilia of their lives all within a common format. Also included is the history of the memorial itself taken from

Kelly’s Directory of Leicestershire and Rutland 1916.These pages are held in a black fabric zipped carrying case.

ii) An exhibition entitled Forget Me Not which honours the role that ancestors of current Hoby residents and members of Hoby District Local History Society played in the First World War, a companion production to 611 i). Each record contains details of the informant, their relationship to the relative involved in the war together with photographs, memorabilia and copies of letters. Only one of the dead recorded in this section, Harry Jeffs, was both a relative of a current resident and also named on the war memorial. Thirty eight pages are all laminated and held in a black fabric zipped carrying case.

613 SUNDRY DOCUMENTS CHURCH WARDEN’S KEEPING

1 A collection of documents, previously belonging to the Beresford family, held in a large iron chest. Stencilled on top of the chest is CAPTN HANS BUSK. The chest and its contents came into the possession of the church upon the death of the last Beresford patron of the living, (Miss Pamela Beresford). The documents include:

twenty-four indentures dating 1680-1882, the majority written on parchment and relating to the advowsons, tithes and glebe lands of the parishes of Hoby, Rotherby, Ragdale and Brooksby.

one indenture on parchment written in Latin.

papers relating to the history of the Browne and Beresford families.
